Chris Curry takes over MCCs baseball coaching duties after spending the past two seasons as an assistant baseball coach at the University of Arkansas. His duties with Southeastern Conference power Arkansas included working with the Razorback pitchers and catchers. He also coached first base for UA and assisted with organization and implementation of daily practices for the Hogs.Under Currys guide during the 2009 season, the Razorback catchers led the Southeastern Conference in runners caught stealing. Arkansas wiped away 34 attempted stolen bases, five more than the next team. It was a drastic improvement for the Razorbacks who just the previous season before Currys arrival finished last in the category.Prior to arriving at Arkansas, Curry was as an assistant coach at Arkansas Tech University in 2008 were he worked with catchers and hitters. His coaching helped Arkansas Tech raise its team batting average 26 points over the previous season to a robust .311 and was instrumental in the development of 2008 Gulf South Conference leading batter Jantzen Black.Before his stop at Arkansas Tech, Curry was an assistant coach for Hendrix College in 2006-2007.Curry played professional baseball for over seven seasons with the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants organizations. During his stint as a professional, Curry worked his way up to the triple-A level with the Cubs between 1999 and 2002 then moved to the Giants where he played double-A ball until the 2005 season. His final season in professional uniform came during the 2006 season as a member of the independent Northern Leagues Gary Southshore Railcats where he was an All-Star his final season.A native of Conway, Ark., Curry was an all-state pitcher and catcher for Conway High School. He set 10 hitting and catching records with CHS in 1994 to 1996.Upon graduation from Conway, Curry then signed with Meridian Community College. Curry played for Eagle Head Coach Scott Berry from 1997-98, where he helped lead the Eagles to back-to-back Region 23 and Miss-Lou Conference titles and an appearance in the 1998 JUCO World Series. As a standout catcher for MCC, Curry was ranked the No. 1 Junior College player by Baseball America in 1998. That same season he was selected as the starting catcher for Team USA JUCO All Star team vs. Japan. He was also named All Region 23 first team and All Miss Lou Conference first team selection in 1997 and 1998.After playing for MCC, Curry signed with SEC power Mississippi State University where he led SEC catchers in fielding percentage. Curry left the Bulldogs in 1999 after being drafted in the ninth round of the Major League Draft.Curry was born on Nov. 17, 1977, and is married to the former Chassity Cossey of Hamburg, Ark. They have a son, Caleb Christopher Curry who was born on March 2, 2010.
